  • PARCHED EARTH
Wuwei Oasis, Hexi Corridor, Gansu, April 24th, 2006 — During a dust storm, a herder walks on parched earth, bringing back home his flock of sheep. In the back, a forest shelterbelt have been planted to break winds that blow away the fertile soil, left bare after winter and dusty because of drought. The wall of trees also halts encroaching dunes of the neighboring Tengger Desert.
  • WATERMELON AT THE DESERT’S EDGE

Minqin Oasis, Hexi Corridor, Gansu Province — Minqin Oasis farmer Xu Li Song, 62, laments that the water table is already too low on his land. “Trees around here are withering, they are half-dead,” observes the former Communist Party village leader. Together with his neighbors (back), he plants watermelon, laying plastic film on the soil to retain moisture and save water.

Located in the Hexi Corridor, a strategic passage on the ancient Silk Road, Minqin Oasis is squeezed between two merging deserts, the Tengger and the Badain Jaran. The oasis is threatening to disappear as it is overexploited for agriculture and affected by droughts. Farmers overpump groundwater for irrigation, causing the trees and vegetation cover to wither and the land to become saline. Tree shelterbelts are planted to protect the topsoil from wind and sand, but huge stretches of them don’t survive. Governments have begun relocating tens of thousands of “ecological refugees” out of the fragile ecosystem.
